Quilt finished

I posted about this quilt early last year when I started putting it together. The design was inspired by a colour exercise in a book I was reading called The Interaction of Color by Joseph Albers. In the meantime, the finished quilt top has been hanging on my design wall where I have enjoyed looking at its brightly coloured squares while deciding what to do about the quilting. Last week I got to it.

First I machine quilted black
concentric circles offset from
the lower right-hand corner
and hand quilted quarter ovals
starting from the lower left-hand corner
which intersected the black circular
stitching,

then added a narrow black binding.

LOVE this piece juanita- partly because of the joseph albers quality to it and what is behind a color study such as this. another favorite but lesser known artist of mine also attended black mountain college-ruth asawa. can you imagine what it would have been like to have been a student there back then?

This is beautiful -I love the colours and the combination of hand and machine quilting.

I really like this quilt, and thanks for the link back to the original work on it - it was fascinating to read. I'm delighted to have found your blog through your comment on mine, I'd somehow missed your TIF pieces till now, so thank you.

I really like this quilt janita! I think the color blocks are really impressive and I like the way you worked the top too,I think the stiching really makes it gel. I'm curious did you know how you wanted to stitch the top from the get-go or did you come to the decision after looking at the top for awhile?

Thanks Lisa! This quilt hung on my design wall for about a year 'cause I wasn't sure how I wanted to quilt it. I took it to a crit group and one woman suggested circles in black thread. Later, I played around with an image of the quilt in a graphics program, tried some different things and liked the effect I got with partial concentric circles centred on one corner. When the machine stitching was done the effect seemed a bit flat and I added the hand stitching to soften it up, to add depth, and to break the rigidity of the black parallel lines.
