Hardware Dragon

I did this piece for a challenge, called TNT, for a monthly group I attend of mixed media and textile artists. The challenge was to do a Tall, Narrow piece with Texture, dimensions 8 x 24" and everything else was up to the artist. I had been wanting to try doing reverse appliqué, and to work in black and white so I worked those things in. For texture I sewed pieces of hardware on to the quilt following the broken circles created by the fractured reverse appliquéd circles that make up the central portion of the quilt. It was interesting trying to figure out how to attach each piece. To add more texture I did some stamping with acrylic paint using the hardware pieces as stamps in the border. I hand quilted the border to finish it up.

You have done an amazing job, starting from just a couple of black circles. I love the machine quilting you have done on it and the hardware really sets it off. Excellent!

thanks for showing the step by step! What a different effect between start and finish on some of them :-)

Happy New Year and thank you all for your kind comments. I gave this quilt to my husband for Christmas. He had been drooling over it for some time.

I love everything about this quilt!

Thanks Gwen! Many people have responded enthusiastically to this quilt and I'm glad you like it. I wonder if it has something to do with the juxtaposition of two seemingly disparate media, quilt art and hardware. Since I finished this quilt I have seen several quilts using hardware for embellishment, something that I hadn't noticed before. Nothing new under the sun. On another topic, has anyone ever noticed what keen commentators we quilters are? Nothing (on this blog) gets more responses than a post about quilting.
